Miss Needham safe after accident

March, 1853

Last week, Miss Needham, of Rotherham, was driving on the Wickersley road, near the Broom Toll Bar, accompanied by a little boy, four years of age, when her horse took fright and galloped to Rotherham at full speed, never stopping till he reached the top of Bridgegate.

Throughout his mad career, supposed to have been at the rate of 30 miles an hour, Miss Needham maintained her self-possession, and managed to guide him so as to avoid all the vehicles and other obstructions of the road, furnishing a remarkable instance of female courage and dexterity.
