Whiston Grange the residence of Ben Bennett (1889-1939)

Whiston Grange

    Ben Bennett, Jnr
Ben Bennett JnrI can remember my father telling me about my granddad who worked for Ben Bennett Jr., a Family-owned company originating in 1883, with the steel side of the business commencing in 1936

James William Genner was born in 1891 in Parkgate, Rotherham and at some stage was a quarryman, possibly at Grange Mill Quarry, Wirksworth, Derbyshire, one of Ben Bennett's Limestone Quarries now employing 25 people, the dates back to 1920.

Longcliffe Quarries Ltd - and Ben Bennett Jr Ltd produce high purity limestone for a range of applications at their Brassington Moor and Grange Mill Quarries.

In 1938 grandad was living on Brunswick Road, Rotherham at a house called 'Fernlea'.
He became a Gardener and Groundsman for Ben Bennett before the War at his home - Whiston Grange, Moorgate.

Granddad also was in charge of Mr. Bennett's dogs which were bull mastiffs.

The war came and the Whiston Grange house was commandeered by the army.

Most of the dogs were unfortunatly destroyed as there was nothing to feed the dogs with at that time. Grandad kept one mastiff called Beauty

Subsequently my Grandad was out of a job and also homeless the whole family was forced to take lodgings on Mangham Road, Parkgate.
