Body of Margaret Eyre found in Canklow Wood
By adjournment, an inquest was held before A. A. Hardy, Esq., at Rotherham, on view of the body of Margaret Eyre, found dead in Canklow Wood, on Saturday 21st August, 1827; when the jury returned a verdict of 'Wilful murder against some person or persons unknown' The deceased was a pauper in the Rotherham Poor House, and had been absent about three weeks, during that time she was frequently seen in and about Canklow Woods.
She had been severely beaten about the body, surgeons said death was caused by a blow to the head.
A person named Thomas Newton, a roper from Rotherham, had been in custody on suspicion of having committed the murder, but as sufficient evidence was not produced to warrant his committment, he was discharged.
