Reverend William Howard

Reverend Hon. William Howard was born on 23 April 1815 at St Georges Parish, Welbeck St , Middlesex. He was the son of Rt. Hon. Kenneth Alexander MacKenzie Howard, 1st Earl of Effingham and Lady Charlotte Primrose.

He was educated at Christ Church, Oxford where he took his Bachelors degree in 1837 and M.A. in 1840. He was ordained Deacon in 1838 by Dr. Charles Spencer, Bishop of Winchester, and admitted into priest's orders in the following year.

He married Barbara Frances Wilhelmina Chester, of Levens Hull, Westmorland; daughter of Lt.Gen. John Chester and Sophia Elizabeth Stuart, on 12th February 1862.

Reverend Hon. William Howard held the office of Rector of Whiston from 1841 until his death in 1881. Living with him at the Rectory Whiston in 1881:

Rev. Howard held the office of Canon of York Cathedral and was Rural Dean of Rotherham and had been more than once, returned to the Convocation of the Province of York, as proctor for the chapter, and also for the Archdeanery of York.

He was a magistrate for the West Riding of Yorkshire.

He died on 12 May 1881 following a stroke, at age 66, without issue.

Notes re Charlotte Primrose: Charlotte Primrose was born at Holland House in 1776, eldest daughter of Neil, 3rd Earl of Rosebery. She died in 1864. She married Thomas Holmes, a scripture reader over fifty years her junior, at Preston on 28 April 1858
