Rev. Thomas Atkinson
Rev. Thomas Atkinson was born about 1840 at Gateshead Fell, Durham. He came to Whiston in 1881. At the time of the census he was Vicar of Yewsley, living at The Vicarage, St. Matthews, Hillingdon, Middlesex, with his family and servants:

- Mary KETTERINGHAM unmarried, age 20 from Knightsbridge, Under Nurse
- Mary LEATHERSLEY unmarried, age 15 from Hillingdon, Middlesex, Nurse Maid
- Elizabeth TAYLOR unmarried, age 24 from Bromyard, Hereford, Cook
- Eleanor Annie MITCHELL unmarried, age 21 from Uxbridge, Parlour Maid
In 1891, four of the children were still living with the family at Whiston Rectory:
- Helen M Atkinson, single, aged 19, a scholar,born in Worcester
- Mildred F Atkinson, single, aged 15, a scholar,born in Worcester
- Jane M Atkinson, single, aged 9, a scholar,born in Whiston , and a son
- Herwald T Atkinson, aged 5, a scholar,born in Whiston
Also living with the family at the time of the census were:
- Gertrude H Isaac, their niece, single aged 16, a scholar, born in Dewsbury Yorkshire
- Mary C L Isaac , niece aged 14, a scholar, born in Dewsbury Yorkshire
- Fanny Mitchell, cook and domestic servant aged 28, born in Canwick, Lincolnshire
- Alice Davy, a parlour maid and domestic servant aged 30, born in Scarback, Lincolnshire
- Catherine Locker, a nurse and domestic servant aged 33, born in Ashbourne, Derbyshire
- Agnes Beard, housemaid and domestic servant, aged 17, born in Earls Croome, Worcestershire and
- Martha Macconnell, a sewing-maid and domestic servant, aged 26, born in Chaddeston, Derbyshire
During his time at Whiston, the church was restored at a cost of £10,000, and alterations were made to the accomodation at the National School.
Rev. Atkinson was a keen sportsman taking a great interest in athletics.
Lieutenant George Bryan Atkinson, 3rd Northumberland Fuseliers, the younger son of Rev and Mrs. Atkinson married Mary Penelope, only daughter of Admiral and Mrs. Noel of 33 Redcliffe Square, London, in about 1916.
Rev. Atkinson's great grandaughter, Linda who lives in Canada, informs me that Rev. Atkinson died on 12th May, 1896 while still in the position of Rector, he was survived by his wife and children.
