Whiston in 1911
Whiston is a parish, township and considerable village, partly in the Borough of Rotherham, and situated in a pleasant valley 6 miles east by north of Sheffield and 2 miles south by east of Rotherham, and is in Rotherham Union, county court district, and Whiston polling district of the Rotherham Division of Yorkshire, rural deanery of Rotherham, archdeaconry of Sheffield and diocese of York.
It includes the hamlets of Canklow, 5 miles north east of Sheffield; Guilthwaite, half a mile south of Whiston; Herringthorpe, 2 miles east; Moorgate, half a mile south of Rotherham; and Morthen, 2 miles east of Whiston.
Mrs B.F.W. Howard's Charity for the Poor was created in 1913
The Church of St. Mary Magdalene, an edifice in the Norman and late decorated styles, was restored and partly rebuilt under the direction of the late Sir Gilbert Scott, R. A. at a cost of about £8000, towards which the late Lady Charlotte Howard (died 1896), made a donation of £5000, in memory of her brother, The Rev. the Hon. William Howard, M.A. rector here in 1841. There are several stained windows including one inserted in 1890 to Henry, second Earl of Effingham (died 5 Feb. 1889) and another placed in 1891 to the Deakin family. The register dates from 1594, and is in fairly good condition. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £400 with residence in the patronage of the Earl of Effingham, and held since 1909 by the Rev. Augustus George Allton of St. Aidans.
The Wesleyan Chapel here was built in 1866 at a cost of £900 and there is another at Canklow erected in 1894. Sir G. R. Sitwell, Bart., J.P. F.S.A. of Renishaw, Derbyshire and the Duke of Norfolk K.G., E.M. are the principal landowners.
The Midland Railway Company opened new locomotove sheds at Canklow on 19th November, 1900.
The Parish Reading Room was established in 1887 to commemorate the Jubilee of Queen Victoria.
The area is 3946 acres of land rateable value £11752 the population in 1903 was 1982.

Elementary School, built in 1873, at a cost of £850, for 22o scholars. Infants School built in 1890 at a cost of £400 for 90 children.
Rotherham is the nearest Railway Station.
