Whiston in 1901

Whiston is a parsh, township and considerable village, partly in the borough of Rotherham. It is in the Rotherham Union and County Court Division and Whiston Polling District of the Rotherham division of Yorkshire. It is in the Rural Deanery of York. It includes the hamlets of Canklow, Guilthwaite, Herringthorpe, Moorgate and Morthen. The township extends into Rotherham Parish and had 1687 inhabitants in 1891 and 3948 acres of land; rateable value £9968. A portion of Whiston has been incorporated with Rotherham borough.
Sir G. R. Sitwell, Bart, J.P., F.S.A. of Renishaw and the Duke of Norfolk are principal landowners.
The Church of St. Mary Magdalene, an edifice in the Norman and Late Decorated Styles has been restored and partly rebuilt under the direction of Mr. J. Oldrid Scott, architect, at a cost of about £8000 towards which the late Lady Charlotte Howard made a donation of £5000, in memory of her brother, the Rev. the Hon, William Howard, M.A., a former rector. There are several stained windows, including one inserted in 1890 to Henry 2nd Earl of Effingham and another placed in 1891 to the Deakin family. The register dates from 1594. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £440 in the patronage of the Earl of Effingham, and held by the Rev. Herbert Alfred Holme, M.A. of St. Johns College, Cambridge.
The Wesleyan chapel was built here in 1866 at a cost of £900 and there is another at Canklow erected in 1894.
The National School built in 1873 at a cost of £850 will hold 220 scholars. There is also a school established at Canklow by John Brown and Co. Ltd, for about 145 children of the workpeople employed by the firm and an Infants School for 180 children.
The Midland Railway opened New Locomotive Sheds at Canklow on November 19th 1900.
