Guilthwaite     ·     Upper Whiston

Whiston in 1862

Whiston is a pleasant but scattered village, situated in a deep and narrow valley at the intersection of the Bawtry and Mansfield and Rotherham roads, 2 miles south by east of the latter, and 6 miles east by north of Sheffield. It is in the Upper division of the Wapentake of Strafforth and Tickhill and includes the hamlets of Canklow, Guilthwaite, Herringthorpe, Moorgate, Morthen, Moorhouse and Upper Whiston, which together comprise 3780 acres of land and in 1861 had 282 houses and 1186 inhabitants.

Sir S. R. Sitwell is lord of the manor and owner of most of the soil. The Duke of Norfolk is owner of Canklow Wood - 213 acres. Mr. John and Mrs. Boomer and Thomas N. Bardwell, Esq., are also proprietors.

The church dedicated to St. James is a neat structure, in the perpendicular style. It is situated on an eminence and forms a conspicuous object for several miles around. The living is a rectory, value £909, in the gift of the Earl of Effingham, and enjoyed by the Hon. and Rev. W. Howard, M.A., who resides at the rectory, a neat mansion, occupying a lofty situation near the schools.

The Wesleyans have a small Chapel here, erected in 1822.

Post Office at Ann Thackray's. Letters arrive from Rotherham, by foot post at 7 a.m. and are despatched at 6 p.m.
