Guilthwaite     ·     Upper Whiston

Whiston in 1849

Source:The General Directory of Sheffield

Whiston is a considerable village in a pleasant valley, 6 miles east by north of Sheffield and 2 miles south by east of Rotherham. Its parish has about 1163 inhabitants, and 3194 acres of land of which Sir George Sitwell is lord and principal owner, though the Duke of Norfolk owns Canklow Wood, 213 acres, and is said to be lord paramount, - the manor being anciently held by the Furnivals and considered part of Hallamshire.

The Church, St. James, is a rectory worth about £900 per annum. The Earl of Effingham is patron and the Rev. William Howard, M.a. is the incumbent.

The hamlets in the parish are Canklow, Guilthwaite, Herringthorpe, Moorgate and Morthen.
