Whiston Families
Richard James Shaw, Postmaster (1847-1911)
Ezra Shaw, a Solicitors clerk and son of Thomas Shaw a tailor, was born in Rotherham in 1823 and married Eliza Creswick (1822-1891), daughter of William Creswick and Mary(Nee) Hepworth, on 30th May, 1842 in Sheffield.

His son Richard James Shaw was born on 11th August, 1847 in Rotherham, and married to Eliza Robinson from Leverton in Lincolnshire. They had ten children:
- Edith Eliza,b. 1870, Rotherham; m Joseph Bacon
- Frederick, b. 1872, Rotherham m Frances E Smith, died South Africa
- Ada, b. 1873, Rotherham
- Horace, b. 1876, Rotherham. m Alice Jessie Marr in South Africa
- Mary Alice, b. 1879, Rotherham. M George Henry Taylor
- Richard Creswick, b. 1880, Whiston. M Edith Frost
- Ernest R., b. 1883, Whiston, Rotherham; d. 1928, Benoni, South Africa. married Georgina Elizabeth Webster
- Eleanor M., b. 1887, Whiston and married Frank Coy in June 1907 in Rotherham
- Frances, b. 1889, Whiston (disabled at birth )
- William C., b. 1891, Whiston
Frank Coy (1855-1963) was the son of Frank Coy and Lucy Oldfield. He had a butchers shop in Rotherham and died at Whiston.
In 1891 their daughter, Ada, aged 17 was a National School teacher employed at Whiston. Three of the boys, Horace, Ernest & Frederick left Whiston late 1890's and went to work in the goldmines of South Africa
After his retirement as a Fender Maker at Rotherham Baths Foundry in Westgate, Rotherham after 36 years service, he became Postmaster at Whiston, from about 1891 until his death in 1911.
The family lived at Ivy Cottage.This photo was taken about 1900. Richard James Shaw was 6'7" while his wife Eliza was 4'6" ! The
children in the photo are Eleanor(standing), Frances(sitting, disabled at
birth), Ernest Robinson Shaw (standing) and William Crestwick
Shaw (sitting). The view you see on the photograph faces 'Rose Cottage' on the Green.
Richard Shaw was connected with Whiston Parish Church for more than thirty years, where he served as:
- Chorister
- Caretaker
- Sexton and clerk
He died on November, 11th 1911 and was buried at Whiston Parish Church.
He left a widow, five sons, four of whom had emigrated to South Africa, and four daughters, one of whom went to Canada.

The only remaining feature of the old house which remains is its old sandstone gatepost which still has its latch.
