Whiston Families
Belk Family
Charles Belk was born in Manchester in about 1835. In 1881 he was described as a general labourer, living in Whiston with Mary his wife who was born in Rotherham about 1844. They had seven children
- Charles, aged 18, a labourer
- Sarah, aged 12
- Flora, aged 8
- Ada, aged 5
- Jessie, aged 4
- Maud, aged 2
All the girls were born in Whiston.
Also living with the family in 1881 was a lodger, George Guest aged 36, an iron moulder.

By 1891, Charles had died and Mary and the family were living on The Green, Charles, Sarah and Flora had left home and their was an addition to the family - Harry who was born about 1882.
Maude, the youngest daughter married John Henry Smith, also from Whiston who worked at Treeton Colliery all his life. They had a daughter Alma Smith who was born in 1899 in Whiston.
Alma married John William Ewert Lyne, who was born in 1899 in Swallownest.
At some stage John and Alma Lyne lived at 2 Rother Crescent, Treeton and later at 97 Wood Lane, Treeton.
Children of John and Alma Lyne:
- Brenda
- Marion who married Sydney Cook.
- Mavis who married Ivan Kelk.
- John Henry married a Brenda
John Lyne died in 1945 and was buried in Whiston Churchyard.
Alma died in 1970 and was also buried in Whiston Churchyard.
